Journal #5

Going into week 6, I’m grateful that I have the practicum to attend in tandem with my recent integration into Dr. Anderson’s class. Without the advice given in The Longman Guide to Tutoring I think  these beginning stages of being a writing fellow would feel like I was walking, blindfolded, into the ocean. Now, they just feel like I’m walking into the ocean with a pretty solid idea of how to swim, some experience swimming, but no real comprehension of how deep the water can get. Overall, I’m feeling fairly capable, though perhaps not quite that confident.

This past Wednesday I Introduced myself to the class. Dr. Anderson proposed that we discuss how to write an essay together. So after I told them my name, what I do as a writing fellow, and my major, we dove into the very basics of what beginning and finishing an essay should entail. While I very much enjoyed talking to the class, I kind of felt like the awkward health teacher telling a class what they already know they should and shouldn’t do. Hopefully that feeling doesn’t translate into my one-on-one meetings with my peers. And, overall, we did get some fairly normal reactions throughout our discussion- even though participation was limited.

I don’t know if I’m feeling much else going into week 5. Perhaps slightly hopeful and mildly overwhelmed- just for the sake of throwing some arbitrary emotions in there.
