Poem #6

Pandemonium

Dear Lettie,
It’s been 8 months
Since I went anywhere
With anyone
other than
You

Remember?

We sat so high
That striped tent
Made our hair stand on end

That was
Before all of this
Before the coughing
Before the distance
Before the lines of half faces
Became the sign of contributing citizens

I wonder what happened
To all of those monkeys
I wonder if the only time
they were let out of their cages
Was for shows

There have been no shows for nine months

Those poor monkeys
Must pace in their cages
Wondering when people will
clap and giggle as they watch
while they do what they have to—
To avoid being whipped

I wonder if they have hair
Or if they tore it all out
Due to stress
Or if they started coughing
Do you think that the monkeys
Get tiny monkey respirators?

Write back soon

All I can see are all of the monkeys
Caged,
Suffocating to death.

-Yours truly.

Ps. I’ve sent some home made bread along too.
